Merion vs Germantown: Closer Than the Scorecard Says

Captain's notes, Suri, Germantown CC

Merion beat Germantown by 24 runs, 143/9 to 119/9, but don't let the margin fool you. This one was closer than it looks.

Some context first. Merion CC is a strong side, especially at home. In the spring, we at Germantown beat them in what people are still calling the match of the year, which doesn't happen often. The rivalry goes back a long way and is mostly friendly, so every game against Merion matters, and this one did too.

Germantown's Arun was the star of our bowling with 3 for 14 in his four overs, including both Merion openers. Credit to our fielders as well: GCC's Feroze and Harsha held difficult catches, and very little got past us in the field. The only leaks were the wides and Merion batter Vishnu Cooblall's patient 36.

Our chase had some fun moments. I hit two sixes on my way to 22 for Germantown, and GCC teammate Hasitha smashed three fours in a 9-ball 17, which was fun while it lasted. But Merion bowler Bilal Hassan took four wickets and our chase ran out of steam.

Off the field, Merion were great hosts as always. During the innings break we also celebrated the birthday of Mihir Trivedi, Germantown's all-rounder and official musician. Happy birthday, Mihir.

Overall, Germantown bowled well and fielded well, then gave away the 24-run margin in wides. Next week's practice plan: aim for the stumps, not the stands.
